Superman and Me is by Sherman Alexie. Superman and me talks about a Indian boy who teaches himself to read by books. He taught himself to look and pictures and say the sentence aloud. He talks about his struggles as an Indian and how growing up in a reservation had its rules. Sherman also talks about how the educators had low expectations on the Indian children, how he was never taught to write poetry, short stories or novels. I agree with what Sherman has to say. I think it is hard to break out of the certain lifestyles you are born into, to be something different, greater. Unlike Sherman, I was taught to become literate through school. I spent tons of time in the school library with the librarian. From personal experience, it takes a lot of strength and perseverance to keep pursuing your goal even when others doubt you.
I refused to fail. I was smart. I was arrogant. I was lucky.
-Sherman Alexie
